Deceptive fake products the focus of ABC News series.
Los Angeles, CA, July 14, 2014 – In a feature news presentation, The Counterfeit Report ® joined ABC News’s acclaimed consumer protection reporter Ric Romero in a series to expose counterfeit and fake products.
Consumers were alerted to “fake” products -- products that bear the brand of global manufacturers, but don’t exist in the manufacturer’s product line. Featured “fake” products included popular Monster® headphones, Supra® shoes and Levis® jeans.

Counterfeit or ‘knockoff” examples included folding DAHON® bikes and fragrances including Marc Jacobs® perfume. Consumers would be alarmed to learn that lab tests on counterfeit fragrances identified ingredients like antifreeze, lead, urine, beryllium, arsenic and bacteria.
These visually deceptive fake products dupe consumers into believing that they are buying an authentic quality national brand and receiving the accompanying warranty, but in fact they receive a poor quality or dangerous fake.
US consumers lose billions to counterfeit products each year, a global $1 trillion criminal enterprise that accounts for 10% of global trade. While 90% of counterfeit good originate in China, many are sold globally on popular e-commerce websites including eBay® (EBAY), Amazon® (AMZN), and China’s Alibaba® website group.
Corporations that sell well-known branded products are the obvious and direct victims of counterfeiting, and counterfeit products pose a real threat to the livelihoods and lives of workers and consumers who may not realize it. Manufactures are vocal that not enough is being done to stop counterfeiting and brand damage.
The Counterfeit Report® cautions consumers to check prices carefully before jumping at any deal and to buy authentic products from authorized retailers or directly from the manufacturer. These examples illustrate that consumers need to be cautious, do their homework and check The Counterfeit Report website before they buy.
