Consumers Cautioned on Deceptive Groupon Listings
Misleading listings continue on Groupon.
Los Angeles, CA, July 1, 2014 – Misleading savings claims by Groupon are not new, but Groupon® is again in the spotlight with exaggerated savings claims. The Counterfeit Report®, a popular consumer protection website, was alerted to the following deceptive Groupon listing for Paul Mitchell’s Re-Works Flexible Texture Cream offered at $16.99.
The Groupon listing claims a 51% savings on the Paul Mitchell product, but that’s simply not true. “Our MSRP is $17.98” says Vikki Bresnahan, Director of Brand Protection for John Paul Mitchell Systems®. While it is ninety-nine cents less than MSRP, Groupon claims a very inflated 51% discount.
In addition, popular Paul Mitchell hair care products are not authorized for sale on Groupon says Bresnahan. "Products purchased from sources other than Paul Mitchell® Salons are diverted, counterfeit or fake.”

This is not an exception for Paul Mitchell products on Groupon. Last November, Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo was also offered on Groupon at a whopping "51% Discount" – just $11.99 + $2.99 shipping with an estimated 12 business day delivery. In fact the authentic Paul Mitchell® Awapuhi Shampoo had a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price ("MSRP") of just $9.50 in Paul Mitchell salons. Paul Mitchell's Freeze and Shine Super Spray was also offered on Groupon for $13.99 + $2.99 shipping; again with a 51% savings off a claimed "$28.35 price." However, authentic Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine Super Spray had a MSRP of only $10 at Paul Mitchell Salons. Paul Mitchell's "The Conditioner" 10.14oz was listed at $11.99 + $2.99 shipping. Promoted as a "$15.99 value" and a claimed "25% savings” -- the Paul Mitchell product's MSRP was just $10.50 in Salons. Bresnahan adds "Paul Mitchell only guarantees authenticity and quality when purchased from Paul Mitchell salons, and without the Groupon shipping wait."
The Counterfeit Report® cautions consumers to check prices carefully before jumping at any deal and to buy authentic products from authorized retailers. These examples illustrate that consumers need to be cautious and do their homework.
